Chapter Seven

Lone Star Cowboy League chapter president Carson Thorn brought the Tuesday evening meeting to order with a pound of his gavel. Small talk faded away as league members, including vice president Byron McKay, secretary Ingrid Edwards and treasurer Lynette Fields, along with other folks on the board, turned their attention to Carson.

Olivia was glad she could be here to support Clint, but she wished the sheriff hadn’t added her to the docket. Surely Lucy would be a better candidate for sharing the Robin Hoods’ latest movements. Olivia didn’t feel she had much to offer.

Poor Clint. He was keeping his composure on the outside, but she knew he was quivering within. A public speaker he was not. Yes, he led trail rides, but that was out in his element, not captured here in a boardroom.

Clint glanced in her direction and she flashed him a reassuring smile, then reached for his hand under the table. His hands were a great deal larger than hers and the warmth of his palm penetrated the icy cold of her fingers.

She hoped her meaning was clear. They were in this together.

And that seemed only right. Clint had become a regular at Barlow Acres over the past week. They’d practically spent more time together than they had apart.

The first day he’d shown up with a bag of feed for the chickens and starter crumbles and leafy greens for the ducks. She probably should have been irritated that he’d ignored her wishes, but the truth was she hadn’t had time to get to the feed store in town. The birds wouldn’t have appreciated going without a meal because she was too busy to go get them food.

She’d figure out a way to pay Clint back. Eventually.

He’d spent the first afternoon out in the hutch playing with the ducklings with the triplets. When she’d gone to check on them, she’d discovered that they’d rigged together a working waterwheel to go along with the waterfall and slide.

“How clever,” she’d exclaimed, crouching to watch the ducklings frolicking in their small pond.

“It was Mr. Clint’s idea,” Levi had told her.

“But the muggles made it,” he’d countered. “I didn’t have to help them one bit. You’ve got bright sons, Mama.”

She’d preened. And she’d invited him to share dinner with them. It was the least she could do. Which had led to bedtime stories for the boys and then a long, cozy talk between Olivia and Clint that lasted well into the evening.

He’d shown up every evening since and had spent the entire last weekend with them. At first he’d had one excuse or another for why he’d come, but eventually he hadn’t offered or needed an explanation at all.

He’d even attended church with her and the boys on Sunday morning, freshly shaved and in black dress pants and a starched white button-down shirt that was clearly just out of its packaging. He cleaned up well, but Olivia found she actually preferred him with a couple days’ growth of beard on his face and in well-worn jeans and a denim shirt.
